If you donated to our Song Session for the Frontline 2020, here’s what a frontline healthcare worker had to say about receiving music therapy through one of our grant recipient projects.

About the project: JB Music Therapy collaborated with the frontline staff of Bethany Care Society, a not-for-profit health, house, and community services provider for seniors and persons with disabilities. Throughout 2020, JB Music Therapy offered frontline healthcare workers music therapy sessions as they worked hard to maintain the health and well-being of their residents.

Testimonials such as this one make our work more meaningful and exciting. Stay tuned to learn more about how your donation is helping to change lives.

Indigenous peoples have been making music in this Indigenous peoples have been making music in this land for centuries and music is an essential part of all Indigenous cultures. Colonialism has devastating impacts on the practice of music and cultural expression by Indigenous peoples. For that reason, we end National Indigenous History Month by celebrating and honouring Indigenous musicians that are top on our playlists.

In 2018, Indigenous music contributed a total of almost $78 million to Canada’s economy (GDP). And although there are numerous stereotypes regarding Indigenous music, the community today is characterized by great diversity, with artists working in every existing genre.

Let’s celebrate these brilliant artists and honour their art by listening to their music and sharing with others.

The award, presented by the Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation, honours an individual who has had an extraordinary impact on music education and the charity.

In addition to this award, that recognizes their support of over 60 schools in the Greater Toronto Area and First Nations communities in Ontario to purchase instruments and deliver culturally-relevant music programming, the Slaight Foundation also recently donated $30 million dollars to Canadian organizations offering mental health services.

Congratulations to Gary Slaight and the Slaight Foundation for making a difference in the lives of many Canadians and thank you for being a supporter of the Canadian Music Therapy Fund.

As much as we are excited to celebrate the 2SLGBTQ+ community, we would also like to raise awareness about the mental health challenges many within the community face.

Although research continues to show higher rates of mental health challenges and prejudice experienced by the 2SLGBTQ+ community, there are many things we can do to end stigma.

Educating ourselves, actively listening to the community, and understanding the additional barriers many face to maintaining good mental health are great places to start.

215 Indigenous children found dead at the Kamloops 215 Indigenous children found dead at the Kamloops Indian Residential School.

And this isn’t some distant history. The last residential school closed in 1996, just about 25 years ago.

The effects of the dark and colonial history of our country continues to affect Indigenous peoples every single day. In Canada, Indigenous peoples experience lower employment rates, poor living conditions, higher levels of suicide, increasing food insecurity, and constant oppression. Just in 2019, 48% of First Nations households did not have enough income to cover their food expenses. We are talking about basic human rights.

The reality for many Indigenous peoples have not changed as the years passed by. We must not only stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, but also work to build stronger and better relationships that are rooted in collaboration and non-exploitative dynamics.

As we mourn and grieve, let’s learn about and honour the brilliance and success of Indigenous peoples and their contribution to our country as much as we learn about the continuous oppression and trauma many face.

As we approach the end of Asian Heritage Month, we must remember to continue reflecting on and celebrating all the achievements and contributions of Asian communities who have done so much to make Canada the country we share today.

We must continue fighting to stop Asian hate and start conversations about the well-being and mental health of Asian communities. Many studies show that discrimination not only exacerbates stress, but is also linked to mental health challenges, such as anxiety and depression.

In order to fight for and best support Asian communities, we must first understand what is happening in Canada and across the world.

This year's theme for Mental Health Week was to #G This year's theme for Mental Health Week was to #GetReal about how you feel. In this first week of May, communities, schools and workplaces got together to raise awareness about how having good mental health isn't about being happy all the time. A mentally healthy life should include the full range of emotions, even uncomfortable ones.

When it comes to talking about emotions, it is really important that we recognize and name what we are feeling. Having emotional literacy allows us to have a better understanding of our emotions so we can communicate better.⁣⁣

A great way to develop emotional literacy is to have meaningful interactions with other people. In times of self-isolation such interactions can be challenging, but video calls are a great way to cope with that. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Music can also be a great tool to help us understand our emotions. Having meaningful interactions through music and with someone we trust, whether that person is a friend or a certified music therapist, can facilitate this process. ⁣⁣
⁣
What other ways have you found to be more emotionally literate? Let us know in the comments below! ⁣⁣

April is Autism Month! And did you k April is Autism Month!

And did you know that music can improve social communication and auditory–motor connectivity in autistic children?

Using improvisational approaches through song and rhythm, a study conducted with children aged 6-12 years on the autism spectrum showed significant results in how music interventions can impact brain connectivity and improve social communication.

Note: It is important to remember that autism isn’t linear, meaning it doesn’t operate on a linear spectrum and autistic people aren’t “less” or “more” autistic because of their abilities. Raising awareness, educating ourselves, and listening to the autistic community is fundamental for us to build a more inclusive and respectful society!

Hi Everyone! I’m Chrissy Pearson and I have the Hi Everyone! I’m Chrissy Pearson and I have the privilege of being the new Executive Director of the CMTF!

I’ve been a certified music therapist since 2003 and have worked in many contexts with many different kinds of people. Perhaps that is why I felt so at home when I joined the team of music therapists at the Music Therapy Centre in 2010. The diverse people I got to work with were amazing! I stuck around and became the manager of the Centre and also took on a role with the charity working in fundraising, public education, events and media.

As you may know, the Music Therapy Centre is a program supported by the CMTF and also the head office. I love the relationship between these two organizations and how each helps the other to grow and expand. In my new role, I’m excited to focus on creating more awareness of music therapy in Canada and helping the people who need it the most to access it.

When I’m not working for the CMTF you might find me doing my other job at Baycrest working in palliative care and psychiatry. You also might see me cuddling my adorable dog, Basil. He brings me joy!
Hi there! I'm Emily Stegweit, a certified music th Hi there! I'm Emily Stegweit, a certified music therapist and the new manager of the Music Therapy Centre located in Toronto, a program supported by CMTF 🎶

Since the start of my music therapy career in 2016, I've been privileged to support and learn from clients with a diverse range of goals and experiences. In my clinical work, I strive to create opportunities for growth and empowerment through a feminist, humanistic, and client-led approach to practice.

Outside of my music therapy work, you can find me baking, taking long walks through the city, or working in the other half of my career as a doula!

I am thrilled to be stepping into the role of Centre Manager and helping CMTF to expand access to music therapy in Toronto and Canada-wide 🧡
Hi there! Some of you might know me, some of you m Hi there! Some of you might know me, some of you might not. My name is Valentina and I’ve been CMTF’s social media coordinator for the last year and a half. I’m the one taking care of the charity’s online presence and the one talking to each one of you around here. Please, continue to engage with me - you make my job lots of fun!

I’m super excited to tell you that I’m taking on the new role of Digital Communications Manager with CMTF and I can’t wait to continue helping the charity to grow digitally. I’m all about making knowledge more accessible for those who are learning and engaging with us!

A fun fact about myself is that I was born in Brazil and I moved to Canada about 5 years ago. I absolutely love this country and I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to live here and meet wonderful people like you 🙂

Which type of music therapy intervention resonates Which type of music therapy intervention resonates the most with you?

Music therapy interventions are used to help accomplish specific goals within sessions. When working with clients, certified music therapists prepare activities that typically fall within these four broad categories to best suit clients' needs.

Determining which type of intervention might be the most effective is done in collaboration with the client or decided on by the therapist!
